The Upper Swansea Valley

The Abercrave Inn is in the small village of Abercrave in the Upper Swansea Valley. The valley runs Northwards into the Brecon Beacons National Park, an area specially designated for its natural beauty.

Just three miles North of Abercrave is Craig-y-Nos Castle and Country Park, which was the estate of the famous opera diva Adelina Patti. The park is open to the public and offers splendid views of the Castle.

The limestone hills of the upper valley are honeycombed with caves and these include one of Europe's largest underground visitor attractions, the National Showcave Centre for Wales.

See the Dan-yr-Ogof Cave with its many rock formations and the massive Cathedral Cave where weddings are held.

The high hills of the upper valley are a haven for walkers and provide marvellous views all the way down to the coast. They are also home to a great diversity of wildlife and are renowned for the many birds of prey which are always in evidence.

Abercrave is in waterfall country. Geological faults running across the courses of local rivers and streams have created many dramatic and beautiful cascades and waterfalls. Henrhyd falls on the right, the tallest in South Wales, is only two miles from the Abercrave Inn and a few miles further on at Ystradfellte are many more.

Just across the valley Cefn-yr-Erw Primate Sanctuary welcomes visitors to see the animals which it rescues and cares for. These include chimpanzees, baboons, spider monkeys, marmosets, capucins, gibbons, wolves, capibaras, lamas, emus, and many farm animals.
